HISTORY OF ANKARA

The archaeological excavations in Ankara have revealed that the paleolithic and neolithic artifacts are the oldest settlement in Ankara. Remains belonging to Hittites, Phrygians, Lydians and Persians were found in the region. The surface area of the province, which is established in an area of plain; about 50% are agricultural areas, 28% are forests and heathlands, 12% are meadows and meralars, 10% are non-agricultural land. Main streams of the province are Kızılırmak, Sakarya River, Ankara Stream, Kirmir Stream, Ova Stream and Balaban Stream. The main lakes are Salt Lake, Mogan Lake and Eymir Lake. The major dams are Sarıyar, Kesikköprü, Çubuk-1, Çubuk-2, Bayındır, Kurtboğazı, Çamlıdere and Asartepe dams.
