The Central Anatolia Region
Aksaray, Ankara, Çankırı, Eskişehir, Karaman, Kayseri, Kırıkkale, Kırşehir, Konya, Nevşehir, Niğde, Sivas, Yozgat
The Central Anatolia Region is the least mountainous region in Turkey. This region was shaped by early volcanic eruptions. This region is bare and monotonous and is mostly used for grazing. However, because of the overgrazing, soil erosions are seen on this plateau.
This region is called the cradles of human civilizations. The Central Anatolia Region has been hosting the homeland of Hattis, Catalhoyuk , which has the remains of settlements from the eighth millennium B.C. The Hattis, Hittites, settled in this region. Besides these civilisations, Seljuks and Ottomans , Romans, Byzantines, Phrygians, Galatians all fought for their dominations and settled in this region. With the migration of Turks from the east in the 11th century, this area changed its culture and religion. However, Alexander the Great also conquered this region to have widest borders.
The most important income sources of this region are agriculture, animal husbandry, and tourism. This region has roughly one-third of the grain production in Turkey. Wheat production exceeds the all other types of grains. The suitable ingredients, which are bulghur, hard wheat and semolina, for making pasta are grown in this region. Besides these grains, you can obtain sown leguminous plants such as beans, chickpeas and lentils. This region also has one-third of the potatoes production in Turkey. Moreover, the industrial plants, sugar beets are obtained in this region. Konya, Ankara, Nigde, Nevsehir and Kayseri are viniculturing and fruit growing leaders in Turkey. Industrial facilities in Central Anatolia are not prevalent enough. In Sivas, Kayseri, and Konya provinces, carpet weaving is concentrated. Actually, it is the main industrial facilities in Corum, Kayseri, Kirikkale, Ankara, Eskisehir, Sivas, and Konya. Cappadocia Region, which has natural wonders fairy chimneys and old cave churches, also produces very high quality grape wines.
For the travellers who would like to visit this breathtaking region, there is plenty of options such as beautiful valleys, such as Ihlara, skiing down the slopes of snowy Mounts Erciyes and Ilgaz, cultural center of many centuries, with its mosques and “Whirling Dervishes”.
