The Eastern Anatolia Region
Ağrı, Ardahan, Bingöl, Bitlis, Elazığ, Erzincan, Erzurum, Hakkari, Iğdır, Kars, Malatya, Muş, Tunceli, Van
The Eastern Anatolia Region has the highest mountains in Turkey. These mountains’ average peak height is more than 3200 m. Many of the peaks are dormant volcanoes. Mount Ararat, which is supposed be landing place of Noah’s Ark, is located in this region. This region also has productive, propitious rivers and lakes for human inhabitation such as the Mus Valley and Lake Van. The northern rugged highlands, which have craggy mountains and the vast lands, are referred as Turkey’s Siberia.
The basic economic activities in this region are agriculture and animal husbandry. Oppurtunities for agriculture in this region are limited. Only one tenth of the whole region is suitable for cultivation. 90 percent of this region are allocated for grazing. Wheat and barley are the main agricultural products of this mountainous region. Other than these, the sowing of industrial plants is not very prevalent. The most common industries in this region are food, tobacco, cotton, and sugar. Most of the Turkish energy production is obtained from the thermoelectric power plant in Afsin-Elbistan and the hydroelectric power plant in Keban.
The Eastern Anatolia Region has high potential to improve the tourism in Turkey. The attention grabbing highlights of the Eastern Anatolia await travellers to have once-in-a-lifetime experience with the ancient structures of stone and nature such as the house of Noah’s Ark- Mount Ararat and the Lake Van.
