The first settlements in Samsun date back to prehistoric times. Paleolithic (old stone period – 600,000-10,000) and mesothelique (medium stone age – 10,000-8,000 BC) artefacts were found in the excavations made in the caves. The city was ruled by many empires. In the 5th century BC the Persians, then the Macedonians (Alexander the Great) became dominant. During Alexander the Great, he proclaimed Amisos as an independent city and was greatly damaged.
